Cedar River Drum Circle

 The drum is not just a musical instrument. To the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people, it holds great cultural and symbolic power. We believe the drum has a life of its own, as well as its own powerful spirit. The drum is the heartbeat of the Indian Nation. It carries the heartbeat of Mother Earth and calls the spirits and nations together. Native Americans believe the drum often helps bring the physical and mental side of a person back in touch with his or her spiritual side. The Drum was formed in Yakama, Washington in the summer of 2000, A dream came to our Chief, Mark Ravenhair, a moose guide spoke to him and he took him deep in to the Cedar River where he showed him the future of what Mark needed to do to start his journey as a ceremonial singer. The Moose presented him in his dream with the hide that would be needed and so the drum is made from a moose in accordance with his dream. The Journey would begin In 2004 when Mark had another dream and was guided to join his family and traveled from the Cedar River Mountains in Washington state to the Cedar River in Iowa, 

The Cedar River drum is now composed of Mark his sons and who ever wishes to sing with them. The singers are in a transition of going back to it's roots bringing back the old school style of the Lakota Nation's sounds as well as a contemporary style here in Cedar Rapids.

The Cedar River Singers visit between 30-40 schools throughout the year educating students about Native American Dance, Music, and Culture. A major emphasis is placed on teaching and correcting Native American stereotypes and misconceptions that still exist today.
